How Slacker Magic Works

Sometimes when I write about manifesting clients and income without the hustle and my Slacker Magic Manifesting System, I get pushback.
The not-so-great kind of pushback comes from people who are deeply committed to hustle culture and have no openness to exploring other possibilities.
But there’s another kind of pushback I welcome. This kind of pushback comes from heart-centered coaches who feel a deep calling to coach and also want time freedom and space for spiritual self-care … and also fear that it’s not possible for them!
Does that sound familiar?
On the one hand, you love the IDEA of Slacker Magic. The thought of actually taking the pressure off sounds so good! You want to believe it’s possible.
On the other hand, though – at face value, it doesn’t seem realistic. There’s this feeling of, “Yeah, that sounds nice for YOU, but how exactly is that going to work for me and my life?”
I get it! It’s totally reasonable to wonder how it actually WORKS in real time. Let me tell you about how I helped a coach with that exact same question.
About a year ago, I was interviewed for a popular online event featuring a dozen other speakers and headlined by #1 New York Times bestselling author Gretchen Rubin. Considering the caliber of experts at the event, titling my talk “Slacker Magic Will Save Us!” really was a subversive choice. :)
The event host was enthusiastic and gracious … and, by her own admission, on the brink of burnout. She was a successful business owner as well as a busy mom of two small kids. She loved my Slacker Magic approach in theory, but hadn’t (yet) tried it for herself.
“Do you really rest before work?” she asked me. “How do you do that, and still get anything done?”
She wasn’t asking in an accusatory way; she was genuinely incredulous! And as a mom myself, I understood where she was coming from. She just didn’t see how it was possible to slack AND still fulfill her responsibilities.
Here’s how I broke it down for her.
I told her it’s not necessarily about the quantity of time. It’s more about the sequence, the ORDER in which we do things. It’s about flipping the “no pain no gain” paradigm on its head, and releasing the pressure to do things perfectly.
Simply put, we put our inner wisdom guidance first, before we take action. We set up insight on purpose … and in doing so, we make our lives SO much easier. When we rest, inner wisdom shows us the puzzle pieces and how they fit together.
Start small and simple. Take one minute and sit in a chair, close your eyes, and do nothing. Take a micro-rest. Insert the slacking before the action. If that doesn’t feel doable, you might soothe your system first – perhaps touching the palms of your hands, putting on gentle music, or just getting a drink of water (swallowing reassures the nervous system).
Remember, slacking doesn’t always have to be super “evolved.” Do not make this another place to push yourself! Let it be easy and fun.
Case in point: When my daughter was small, sometimes I’d hide in the bathroom and watch Netflix on my phone for two minutes. Just two minutes! You might think that’s too small to be significant.
To that I say: Try it yourself. See how much of a difference two minutes – even thirty seconds – can make. It’s understandable that you need evidence, so go ahead – document what happens when you tune into wisdom first, and act second. You will get more evidence the more you do it.
See how it feels to decide that you will not zest a lemon for a recipe, and that instead you will stretch out your aching shoulder muscles. See how it feels to tend to yourself first, even for just a moment, before launching into anything else.
