You Can Find Success, Even with a Chronic Illness

I read two horrifying social media posts recently and I just can’t ignore them. One post said that if you’re spending time watching sports and Netflix, that’s the reason you’re not rich. The other said that telling new coaches they can have a business without hustling isn’t true, because sometimes you just have to get sh*t done.

After I recovered from my heart attack, I immediately sat down to write this to you, my lovely heart-centered friend.

Here is the problem: Both of those posts are ableism in action.

When people are trying to promote their businesses, they often write strong opinions as if they are facts.

DO NOT buy into this kind of messaging.

If you have a body that tends to get stress-induced illnesses, has a chronic syndrome, or just collapses on you periodically, then you simply can’t hustle and expect to be healthy, or even alive, lol!

The fact that people with bodies that aren’t susceptible in this way are telling you that you can only succeed if you hustle is just plain wrong.

I get a wee bit hot under the collar when I read this sort of message.

Imagine if someone who is writing these kinds of pressure-filled messages suddenly got a chronic illness.

First, they would have to adjust to the reality that this is the body they have now (like we have already done)! They would resist it. They would be exhausted. They would have to rethink everything.

They just have no idea!

You are a f*cking warrior, my friend. You live daily with a body that often dictates what you can/cannot do, and you still parent, run your business, have dreams, take care of your household, and so, so, much more.

Maybe you’ve lived this way for a long time, or maybe it’s more recent.

I’ve personally dealt with stress-induced illnesses my whole life. When I was 20, I found out about mind-body healing and learned how to reduce the number of these darn illnesses/pain syndromes that I encounter.

However, I’m not impervious. I have to keep up my mind-body work to stay out of the pit of stress-induced pain.

And, I also have a chronic syndrome that I didn’t even know I had. I just thought all bodies were made this way. Come to find out, NOPE. I have Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome, which is a connective tissue disorder that affects the entire body.

For me, it’s created severe ligament laxity and friability that causes my muscles to spasm in order to hold my joints together. Super fun times!

It’s also the reason my uterine ligaments broke after carrying only one child, causing complete stage four pelvic organ prolapse. Even after major repair surgery, I still have chronic symptoms from this that deeply affect my daily life and require ongoing physical therapy.

While my mind-body healing work definitely helps the Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome symptoms a lot, I still experience issues. Medications are like wee little bombs going off in my body and I can’t really take them. There are many other bizarre effects of this syndrome. I can literally injure myself lying in bed.

For me to get out of bed, parent, run a coaching business, and take a 30-minute walk each day requires SO MUCH. So, so much. SO VERY MUCH.

LOL!

I require major self-care just to function.

So, when I see someone saying that you have to hustle in order to have your dream coaching business, I really can’t stand it.

No, you don’t.

I’m living proof.

My clients are living proof.

Instead of just “getting sh*t done” you can actually flow with inner wisdom and inspiration and only work when you actually have the energy for it. The rest of the time, you can rest, play, restore your spirit, and do whatever the hell you want.

You get to watch Netflix and make 6-figures or more.

I sometimes watch Netflix in the MIDDLE OF THE DAY. Gasp.

You get to take amazing care of you.

Please never forget that. Resting is your right. Your body requires rest. In fact, it requires more rest than you even realize.
