Why Experimentation is Key to Manifesting Clients

One of the most important things you can do to attract clients into your program is to stay in an experimentation mindset when you’re creating, testing, launching, and running your program.

I’m going to show you exactly what happens when you stay in the experimentation mindset, and you won’t want to skip this info! It’s the best thing you can do to manifest clients and money.

Experimentation is the opposite of self-pressure, which we as heart-centered folk often find ourselves doing. We end up being hard on ourselves and critical of ourselves, and our businesses, and we often compare ourselves to others only to find our work lacking.

This is something you really can’t afford to do if you want to manifest a flow of lovely clients into your program.

Change this one core habit - being hard on yourself and pressuring yourself - and you will immediately see your manifesting shift into high gear.

I’ve been coaching since 2008, which is when I opened the doors to my business. Throughout my years as a coach, whenever I’ve stayed in the experimentation mindset, my manifesting has worked like gangbusters.

For example, when I started out as a newbie coach, I really wanted to run live retreats. One of my first retreats was a collaborative project with two other coaches. We sold exactly three seats to this live retreat.

Our expenses included renting a space, renting horses, travel, food, and materials. With only three participants, we didn’t even come close to breaking even, much less have any extra to pay ourselves!

It would have been easy to beat myself up for that “failure,” but luckily I didn’t. (Don’t worry, you’re not alone if you beat yourself up - I’ve done it approximately one billion times.)

I managed to stay in an experimentation mindset and get curious about why we didn’t get more participants, what I could do differently to make sure my retreats were profitable, and even get excited about trying again.

Instead of assuming I’d done something wrong or telling myself I wasn’t good enough, I simply focused on curiously exploring those questions above. I remember thinking to myself that this was just part of the experiment.

Fast forward a couple of years later and I was making $5,000 in pure personal profit off this same retreat every time I held it. My colleagues also made that same amount, and we covered all of our expenses.

You might think that it’s easier to be in an experimentation mindset when you’re new like I was in that example because it’s ok to experiment when you’re new. Eventually, though, you have to “get it right.”

However, I’m going to encourage you to stay in that experimentation mindset forever.

I never think about anything in my business as “done.” I always think about it as an ongoing experiment. There is no failure. There’s just guidance letting me know that I need to get curious and then make some adjustments. (Inner wisdom is the best help for knowing which adjustments to make!)

If I get stuck in a self-critical spiral and start pressuring myself, the easiest way out is to simply remind myself that self-criticism doesn’t manifest clients or money, whereas the experimentation mindset, which is based on curiosity, DOES.

That’s so motivating that I can often simply shift gears in a few seconds from self-criticism to curiosity.

Curiosity is relaxed. It invites you to notice inner wisdom and to open up to inspired aha moments.

Self-criticism is tense. It keeps you stuck in your mind and then you can’t hear inner wisdom or inspired aha moments.

It’s pretty easy to see why curiosity keeps your manifesting on point!

If I never think of anything as done in my business, there’s no risk in experimenting and putting it out there. I can feel totally relaxed, because I know I’ll tweak and adjust it if needed. No big deal.

This kind of calm energy allows my best ideas to flow in regularly and keeps me energetically aligned with what I want to manifest. In a practical sense, I’m more present in my business and able to quickly adjust and take action where needed.

One of the ways I teach my clients to experiment in their business is to run a test version of their signature program before they launch the program at full price. This is a literal experiment that helps them not only stay in the experimentation mindset but allows them to actually experiment with all their material and sell it in a really low-key, low-pressure way.

They offer their program for a discounted rate at first in exchange for testimonials. The best part is that then they get to gain confidence around their ability to deliver their material AND their ability to sell it! They also get solid testimonials and feedback, which is the gold every coach needs when promoting a program.

They set the program at half-price or less, and they shoot for getting two to four people in the program. They also tell their audience authentically that they are running a test program. This takes ALL the pressure off and makes it way easier to have fun and do what they love without any feelings of hustle, pressure, or marketing stress.

I love telling my audience when I’m experimenting, and I still do test launches and out-loud experiments in my business. Just because I’ve been doing this for a long time and have built up an audience of amazing heart-centered coaches doesn’t mean I should stop experimenting.

Every time I have a new goal, a new vision, a new idea, or a new program, I experiment right out loud with my audience. There’s nothing more freeing and relaxing than being in the flow of experimentation and never having to “get it right.”

Right now, I’m running an experiment for my business around how I manage the systems in my business that support my two main programs. In the coaching industry, we call this “scaling,” and I’ve been scaling the business for the past three years from a smaller $15K/month business to a larger $25K + per month business. Now I’m ready to scale even more, so I’m building new systems!
